What “sanitation” really means in nails

Infection control isn’t just “being clean”—it’s a system that protects you and your client every single service.

1) The 3 levels (simple + practical)

• Cleaning: remove dust, product residue, skin, and debris first.

• Disinfecting: kill most germs on non-porous tools/surfaces after cleaning.

• Sterilizing: highest level (typically for medical/dental settings). In nail services, you’ll mostly focus on proper cleaning + disinfecting plus using single-use items correctly.

2) Your non-negotiables (every appointment)

Before the client sits:

1. Wash hands (or sanitize if handwashing isn’t possible in that moment).

2. Put on gloves (recommended for many services; required if there’s any risk of contact with blood/body fluids).

3. Disinfect the table, arm rest, lamp switches, bottles you touch, and tools tray.

4. Set out only what you need (less clutter = less contamination).

During service:

• Never “double dip” product (avoid touching jar openings with dusty/used tools).

• Keep dirty tools in a designated “dirty” container—never back onto the clean area.

• If you touch your phone, hair, face, or a non-sanitized item: change gloves / sanitize hands.

After service (breakdown):

1. Remove and dispose of single-use items (files, buffers, wipes, orangewood sticks, etc.).

2. Move reusable tools to “dirty.”

3. Clean → disinfect tools/surfaces using the product’s contact time.

4. Store disinfected tools in a clean, closed container.

3) Tool categories (know what you can disinfect)

• Non-porous, reusable (metal/glass/plastic): clean + disinfect (per label).

• Porous / absorbent (files, buffers): single-use only unless your program uses a specific disposable system.

• Electrical (e-file handpiece): wipe down per manufacturer instructions; use barriers; disinfect the exterior only.

4) If there’s blood (quick protocol)

• Stop service, glove up (if not already), apply pressure, clean the area, bandage.

• Disinfect any contaminated surfaces/tools immediately.

• Dispose of contaminated disposables safely.

• Document if required by your program/state rules.

5) Quality standard (the “luxury” version)

Your client should feel:

• safe (clean station, fresh tools, professional routine)

• cared for (you explain what you’re doing briefly)

• confident (consistency = trust)
