By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
[ ] Identify the most common gel polish problems (lifting, wrinkling, shrinkage, dull top coat) and what causes them.
[ ] Troubleshoot gel issues using a simple 3-step method: prep → product thickness → curing.
[ ] Apply corrective technique changes (thin coats, edge control, cure positioning) to improve retention.
[ ] Communicate fixes to a client professionally (without blaming the client).
Gel troubleshooting = a system (not a mystery)
Most gel problems come from one of three buckets:
Prep issues
Product thickness/edge control
Curing issues
1) Lifting (most common)
What it looks like: separation at cuticle, sidewalls, or free edge.
Top causes:
prep left skin/oil/dust behind
gel flooded into cuticle/sidewalls
free edge not capped (or rough shaping)
client habits (picking/chemical exposure) but fix technique first
Fix:
clean cuticle area (non-living tissue only)
keep coats thin + leave a clean margin
cap free edge with base/top lightly
2) Wrinkling
What it looks like: ripples or “bunched” gel after curing.
Top causes:
coats too thick
under-curing (wrong lamp, wrong time, hand position)
Fix:
thinner coats + fewer strokes
ensure full cure time and correct hand placement
3) Shrinkage
What it looks like: gel pulls away from edges leaving a gap.
Top causes:
applying too close to cuticle then pulling away
gel is self-leveling and moves during cure
lamp position/angle issues
Fix:
apply slightly away from cuticle, push gently toward (don’t touch), then pull
flash cure (if system allows) to “freeze” edges
4) Dull top coat / tacky finish
Top causes:
top coat under-cured
wiped too aggressively
wrong cleanser for inhibition layer
Fix:
correct cure time + correct wipe product (per system)
5) The “3-question” troubleshooting method
Was the nail truly clean/dry? (prep)
Were coats thin with clean edges? (application)
Was curing correct for this brand/lamp? (cure)
6) Luxury standard
A luxury professional doesn’t panic—just corrects the system:
calm explanation
clean fix plan
consistent results

Students apply gel to tips using thin coats.
Instructor intentionally “creates” a common mistake (thick coat or flooding) and students identify it.
Students fix the mistake and reapply correctly.
Students complete a troubleshooting worksheet (cause → fix).
