Lesson 31: E-File Safety, Bits & Hand Control (Beginner)

NT101-M08-L01

M08-L01

Beginner

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • [ ]  Explain what an e-file is used for (refining, removal, cuticle detailing) and what it should NOT be used for (digging into natural nail/skin).

  • [ ]  Identify beginner-safe bit types (safety bit, sanding band, carbide/ceramic for product removal) and what each does.

  • [ ]  Demonstrate safe hand control basics (stabilization, angle, pressure, speed control).

  • [ ]  List e-file safety boundaries (heat, “rings of fire,” skin contact, over-filing) and how to prevent them.

E-file = control, not speed

The e-file is not about being fast—it’s about being precise and safe.

1) What the e-file is for (beginner)

refining product (smoothness, shaping)

removing bulk safely (reduce-down)

detailing around the cuticle (only with correct bit + training)

removal assistance (not ripping product off)

2) What the e-file is NOT for

digging into the natural nail

“scraping” cuticle skin aggressively

forcing removal when product isn’t ready

3) Bit basics (safe starter set)

Safety bit (rounded top): gentle near cuticle area when used correctly

Sanding band (fine grit): surface refining and prep (with light pressure)

Carbide/ceramic (product removal): for reduce-down (not natural nail)

4) The 4 rules of hand control

Stabilize the finger/hand.

Light pressure (let the bit do the work).

Keep moving (don’t stay in one spot → heat).

Correct angle (flat to surface; don’t “point” into the nail).

5) Beginner safety boundaries

Stop and reassess if you see/feel:

heat or burning

redness (“rings of fire”)

skipping (bit jumping)

client discomfort

6) Luxury standard

Luxury e-file work looks like:

minimal dust

smooth finish

client comfort

no redness or irritation

Instructor coaches students through the skill.

Practice drills:

  • Stabilization drill (no power): 3 minutes

  • “Hover passes” on a practice surface: 5 minutes

  • Slow reduce-down passes on product (practice hand): 10 minutes

Coach’s checklist:

  • [ ]  Stabilizes finger consistently

  • [ ]  Uses light pressure

  • [ ]  Keeps bit moving

  • [ ]  States 3 safety stop signs

  • Quiz me on e-file safety boundaries.

  • Explain “rings of fire” and how to prevent them.
