Lesson 33: Advanced Shaping (Coffin, Almond, Square) + Symmetry Checks

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
[ ] Identify key shape differences (square, squoval, coffin, almond) and when to recommend each.
[ ] Use a repeatable symmetry-check system (top view, side view, down-the-barrel) while shaping.
[ ] Correct common shaping issues (leaning, wide sidewalls, uneven corners, bulky free edge).
[ ] Create consistent shape across all 10 nails using a step-by-step shaping order.
Shape is a luxury signature
A clean design on a bad shape still looks messy. A clean shape makes simple sets look expensive.
1) What defines each shape (quick guide)
Square: straight sidewalls + straight free edge.
Squoval: square with softened corners.
Coffin: tapered sidewalls + straight, shorter free edge.
Almond: tapered sidewalls + rounded tip (no flat edge).
2) The shaping order (repeatable)
Set length (match all nails).
Shape sidewall #1.
Shape sidewall #2.
Create/clean the tip line (shape-specific).
Refine outline + remove bulk.
3) The 3 symmetry checks
Top view: outline and widths match.
Side view: thickness and arch look balanced.
Down-the-barrel: no leaning; structure centered.
4) Common problems + quick fixes
Leaning nail: correct sidewalls; check down-the-barrel often.
Wide sidewalls: taper slightly and refine corners.
Bulky free edge: thin from underside/edge carefully (without weakening).
Uneven corners (square): square up the free edge, then match corners.
5) Luxury standard
consistent shape across all 10
clean sidewalls
smooth outline
comfortable thickness
