Beginner

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • [ ]  Diagnose retention problems using a root-cause checklist (prep, product, cure, structure, client habits).

  • [ ]  Match symptoms to likely causes (lifting at cuticle vs sidewall vs free edge breaks).

  • [ ]  Create a “fix plan” for the next appointment (service modification + aftercare + rebook rhythm).

  • [ ]  Communicate retention expectations professionally without blaming the client.

Retention issues are data

When you troubleshoot like a pro, your sets last and clients trust you.

1) The retention map (what it usually means)

  • Cuticle lifting: often flooding, cuticle left on nail plate, or too thick near cuticle.

  • Sidewall lifting: often sidewalls not sealed, shape imbalance, or touching side skin.

  • Free edge breaks/chips: often too thin at stress points, wrong length for lifestyle, no capping.

2) The 5-question root-cause checklist

  1. How was prep (cuticle removal, cleansing, dehydration)?

  2. Was there any skin contact/flooding?

  3. Was curing done correctly (time + placement + lamp)?

  4. Was structure balanced (apex/strength zone + thickness)?

  5. What did the client do (picking, heavy hands, chemicals, no oil)?

3) Fix plan framework (copy/paste)

  • Today’s issue:

  • Likely cause:

  • Change I’ll make next service:

  • Aftercare instruction:

  • Rebook timing:

4) Luxury standard

Luxury troubleshooting is:

  • calm

  • factual

  • solutions-first
