Lesson 2: Bits + RPM Control (Choosing the Right Bit)

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • [ ]  Identify beginner-safe e-file bits by category (safety/rounded top, sanding band mandrel + band, carbide/ceramic for product removal) and describe what each is used for.

  • [ ]  Explain RPM as “speed,” and choose a safe starting RPM mindset (low → moderate) based on the task (refine vs remove bulk).

  • [ ]  Adjust three control levers—RPM, pressure, and angle—to prevent heat, skipping, and grooves.

  • [ ]  Follow a simple bit + RPM decision checklist for common scenarios (refine, reduce-down, clean-up on product only).

Bits + RPM = control, not intimidation

Most e-file mistakes come from using the wrong bit, the wrong speed, or too much pressure. A pro doesn’t guess—pros use a simple decision system.

1) Bit categories (beginner-safe overview)

A) Safety/rounded-top bits (refinement near the cuticle area on PRODUCT only)

  • Designed to reduce accidental cuts when used correctly.

  • Best for controlled refinement, not aggressive removal.

B) Sanding bands (fine grit for safety)

  • Good for surface refinement and light prep.

  • Disposable (single-use) = better sanitation.

  • Rule: if you’re unsure, choose a finer grit and work slower with light pressure.

C) Carbide/ceramic bits (product removal / reduce-down)

  • Used to remove bulk product efficiently.

  • They are not “natural nail bits.”

  • The goal is to remove product in layers and stop before the nail plate.

2) RPM: what it means and how to think about it

RPM = how fast the bit spins.

  • Too low RPM can cause dragging and skipping (especially if pressure is heavy).

  • Too high RPM with pressure causes heat and damage quickly.

Beginner rule: start low-to-moderate, then adjust ONLY if you also keep:

  • light pressure

  • flat angle

  • constant movement

3) The 3 control levers (memorize this)

  1. RPM (speed): higher speed increases friction potential.

  2. Pressure: pressure creates heat faster than speed.

  3. Angle: “pointing” creates grooves; flat angle creates smooth refinement.

If something feels wrong, adjust in this order:

  1. lighten pressure, 2) correct angle, 3) adjust RPM.

4) Quick decision checklist (common scenarios)

Scenario: Surface refinement (finish work)

  • Bit: fine sanding band or refinement bit

  • RPM: low-to-moderate

  • Pressure: feather light

  • Movement: long, smooth passes

Scenario: Reduce-down (remove bulk product)

  • Bit: carbide/ceramic product removal

  • RPM: moderate (enough to cut cleanly)

  • Pressure: light-to-medium (never heavy)

  • Movement: steady passes, keep moving, dust off often

Scenario: Near cuticle margin (product only)

  • Bit: safety/rounded top refinement bit

  • RPM: low-to-moderate

  • Pressure: feather light

  • Movement: micro-passes; reassess every 2–3 passes

5) Luxury standard

Luxury e-file work is:

  • smooth (no chatter marks)

  • comfortable (no heat)

  • clean (minimal dust)

  • consistent (same outcome every nail)

Practice drills:

  1. Bit ID drill: match 6 bits to the task (refine / remove / prep / cleanup).

  2. RPM feel drill: test low vs moderate on a practice surface and describe what “smooth” feels like.

  3. Angle drill: practice flat passes without “pointing” (10 passes per nail).

  4. Pressure drill: repeat passes using feather pressure only.
