By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
[ ] Apply foils, stickers, and decals cleanly with correct placement and edge control.
[ ] Choose the right sealing method (encapsulate vs top coat) based on the thickness and material.
[ ] Prevent lifting and snagging by smoothing edges and capping the free edge.
[ ] Troubleshoot common longevity issues (wrinkles, bubbles, lifting edges) with a fix checklist.
Longevity is all about edges
Foils and decals fail at the edges first. Luxury application is clean, flat, and sealed.
1) Placement rules (clean and professional)
Place art on a smooth base.
Avoid placing thick elements too close to the cuticle margin.
Press down edges fully before sealing.
2) Foils (general system)
Use foil adhesive/gel as required by your product.
Cure correctly, then press foil with firm, even pressure.
If patchy: add more adhesive/gel only where needed (don’t smear everywhere).
3) Stickers + decals (general system)
Trim to fit; avoid overhang.
Press and smooth from center outward to remove bubbles.
If edges are thick, lightly buff/press flat before sealing.
4) Seal methods (choose based on thickness)
Top coat only: best for ultra-thin decals and flat stickers.
Encapsulate: best for thicker decals, layered stickers, or textured edges.
5) Troubleshooting quick fixes
Edge lifting: buff edge lightly, reseal, cap edge.
Bubbles: lift and reapply (don’t top coat over bubbles).
Wrinkles: cure, then flatten/replace; wrinkling often = layer too wet.
Snagging: needs encapsulation or a thicker seal layer.
6) Luxury standard
Luxury decal work is:
flat (no bumps)
sealed (edge capped)
clean cuticle area
no lifting or snagging
