Lesson 2: Advanced Cuticle + Prep (Retention at Pro Level)

Advanced

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • [ ]  Complete an advanced prep routine that prioritizes retention while protecting the natural nail (no over-filing).

  • [ ]  Explain the top 5 causes of lifting (prep, flooding, product choice, curing, client behavior) and how to prevent each one.

  • [ ]  Use a “retention checklist” to diagnose lifting and choose the correct correction plan.

  • [ ]  Communicate professional aftercare and boundaries that reduce service failures.

Retention is mostly prep + product control

Master-level retention doesn’t come from magic primers. It comes from consistent prep, clean application, correct curing, and client education.

1) Advanced prep checklist (safe + retention-focused)

  1. Sanitize hands + tools; assess nail type and damage.

  2. Push back and clean the cuticle area (remove dead tissue).

  3. Shape and refine free edge.

  4. Remove shine lightly (do not thin the nail plate).

  5. Dust off thoroughly (dust left behind causes lifting).

  6. Dehydrate and apply bonder/primer per your system (thin layer).

  7. Apply product with clean margins (no flooding).

2) The top 5 causes of lifting (and prevention)

  1. Prep issues (dead tissue, dust, oils) → clean prep + dust control.

  2. Flooding → leave a tiny margin; refine after cure; keep product off skin.

  3. Wrong product choice (too soft/too hard) → match product to lifestyle.

  4. Curing problems (weak lamp, wrong timing) → consistent curing checks.

  5. Client behavior (picking, chemicals, nails-as-tools) → aftercare + boundaries.

3) Lifting diagnosis (where it starts matters)

  • Cuticle lifting: often flooding or cuticle tissue left behind.

  • Sidewall lifting: often insufficient sealing or shape imbalance.

  • Free-edge lifting: often no edge cap, thin tip, or heavy client wear.

4) Sensitization safety (non-negotiable)

Uncured product on skin can cause long-term reactions.

Luxury standard = clean margins always.

5) Luxury standard

Luxury retention work is:

  • clean prep with no damage

  • thin, clean cuticle margin

  • sealed edges

  • client education that protects results

Practice:

  • Students complete prep on 5 nails with instructor checks at each stage.

  • Students practice clean margin placement using a “no flooding” rule.

Coach’s checklist:

  • [ ]  Cuticle area clean (no dead tissue)

  • [ ]  Nail not over-filed

  • [ ]  Dust removed fully

  • [ ]  Clean margins (no skin contact)

  • [ ]  Explains 5 lifting causes

  • Quiz me on lifting causes and diagnosis (15 questions).

  • Create a retention troubleshooting decision tree.

  • Role play a client who picks at nails—help me set boundaries professionally.

  • Write a short aftercare card for retention.
